History of the hotel
The building formerly thought of as a tripartite residential house was constructed by the master-builder Leonhard Schäfer from Mannheim towards the end of the 19th century. As for the exact year of construction of building no. 32, we can find the inscription "1892" at the blind arches over the front windows in the second floor. Concerning the architectural style of the landmarked edifice, it is considered not to be "Art Nouveau", but rather contemporary historism under the impression of "Renaissance Nouveau". As to the shape of the side-buildings (No. 28, 32) ,the overall architectural picture of the tripartite clinker construction structured with sandstone is mainly formed by balconies, bays and tailed gables.
Under this home adress (formerly: Leopoldstr. (Anlage) 32), the directory of the city of Heidelberg lists as proprietor of the building "L. Harrer" and "Pension Villa Beau Séjour", as well as the well-known art historian "Prof. Dr. Henry Thode" and the Earl Joseph von Zakrzewsfi. Later entries, which can be found in the digitised directories of the University of Heidelberg, refer to the owner "Frz. Braun, Hotel- und Fremdenheim Harrer". From 1942 on, there are no more entries to be found which is certainly due to the war - and post-war situation in Germany. Finally in 1971, the hotel is acquired by the family Schultes, where it is managed today by the second generation of family members.
A great deal of information on the history of the hotel is derived from the municipal archive of the city of Heidelberg , which also stores contemporary documents like the historical postcards of the "Pension Harrer" in their archives. Some of the digitised versions of these postcards you can see in the adjacent pictures as well as original architectural plans of the hotel at the turning of the 19th century (to enlarge in gallery-mode please click on them).
